6 Honey Home Remedies You Should Know About

Pour the liquid onto a cookie sheet lined with wax paper and let it set for 15 to 30 minutes until it is cool enough to touch. Use scissors or a knife to cut the “candy” into drop-size pieces and roll them in a powder: tapioca flour, cocoa powder, powdered sugar or ground cinnamon. Place all the drops in a jar with some of your coating powder and then shake the jar, making sure that all the drops have been thoroughly coated. Shake off all the powder and store the drops in a tightly sealed jar.
  2. Cough drops. Buckwheat honey is the best for calming a cough. If works even better than dextromethorphan and diphenhydramine at suppressing a cough and helping people sleep. ‘‘Sun kissed kate’’ makes cough drops by putting slices from 1 lemon, 2 inches of fresh ginger and 2 cups of water on a pan and bringing it to a boil. Let this simmer for 20 minutes and then strain out the ginger and lemon. While the tea is steeping, put a 1-inch layer of powdered sugar in a cookie sheet and form circular molds by using the curved side of a teaspoon. Add 1 cup of buckwheat honey to the tea and bring it to a boil. Once it boils, reduce the heat to medium and let it cook until it reaches 300°F. Pour the liquid in the molds and let it cool. It takes about 1 1/2 hours. Sift the powdered sugar off and store in an air-tight jar.
  3. Cough syrup. If you want a cough syrup to take at night, the National Honey Board offers this recipe. Combine 1 1/2 tablespoons of lemon zest, 1/4 cup peeled, sliced, fresh ginger and 1 cup of water. Boil this for 5 minutes. Strain the lemon and ginger out, and then add 1 cup of buckwheat honey. Store the syrup in a jar.
  4. Eczema ointment. Manuka honey is the best honey for healing wounds. ‘‘Beautymunsta’’ shares a recipe for treating eczema. In a double boiler, melt 1/2 cup shea butter and 1/4 cup cocoa butter until liquid. Remove from heat and add 2 teaspoons Manuka honey and squeeze the oil out of a vitamin E capsule. Mix thoroughly and put in the fridge for 15 minutes. Once the time is up, remove and whip with a hand mixer until it’s white and creamy. Add 10 drops of your favorite essential oil and mix thoroughly and place into hand cream jars.
  5. Wound treatment. Manuka honey can be used straight to heal cuts and scrapes. ‘‘Leaf’’ says to apply the honey directly to the wound. If the honey is too thick, warm it slightly to make it runnier. Once the wound is covered, put a bandage over the top to keep the honey from getting on anything else.
  6. Wound ointment. If you want something that isn’t quite so sticky, you can combine the honey with the wound healing properties of olive oil. Melt 1 cup of bees wax in a double boiler. Add 1 cup olive oil and 1 cup Manuka honey and mix. Pour into tins and let it set. Use liberally on any wound.
